Transition into adulthood is a special time and it would be hard to find a more joyous occasion to celebrate than a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. In fact, many communities celebrate a Bar Mitzvah on the same scale as a wedding. To ensure everything goes smoothly, here are a few things to consider when planning a Bar Mitzvah celebration.

Set a budget early.

The earlier the better. There is nothing worse than booking an amazing Mitzvah venue only to later realize that you cannot afford it. Settle on a budget early, before you plan anything else, and stick to it to avoid any ballooning costs. This will also give you ample time to handle unexpected expenses. When deciding on a budget, think of the following:

  • Guest list
  • Venue
  • Catering
  • Entertainment

If budgeting is not your cup of tea, the Venue One’s team, who has years of experience in establishing budgets, would be more than happy to help you!

Know your guest amount

Imagine booking a beautiful space that turns out so small that the event seems overcrowded, or so large that the room looks deserted. To ensure a stress-free celebration, carefully estimate who and how many are coming to have an accurate idea of how big your guest list is.

Only then select an area that is size appropriate. To alleviate some of the capacity hurdles, Venue One North Shore offers several meeting rooms to accommodate any size proprietary and give the adults a private space to sit back from the Mitzvah.

Find the perfect venue

Without doubt, finding the right venue is the most important task you will face, and it will largely be determined by your budget and the number of guests attending. It may be held at the synagogue, but it’s worth to explore other options to find the optimal venue for both teenagers and adults to enjoy themselves to the fullest.

While Venue One operates in two locations: Downtown Chicago and North Shore, we have a feeling that it is the latter that will get most Bar Mitzvah boys excited. The fully customizable 85,000 square foot space that lies in the middle of Deerfield was once known as the Berto Center, a special place for all Chicago Bulls fans. The Sheri L. Berto Center was, for twenty years, the Bulls’ practice facility, where greats like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen played ball. We have yet to find a Bar Mitzvah boy who wouldn’t want to celebrate his special time there.

Choose the right food

Hosting a bar mitzvah celebration is a great opportunity to introduce your non-Jewish friends to culture-specific foods. Venue One’s catering team can either create a custom menu that accommodates all your refreshment needs, or you can select from our creative kosher menu collections. Consider fun food ideas to add variety such as Asian noodle salads, or miniature Chicago-style hot dogs. Last, make sure your reception venue has a liquor license to avoid any disappointed adults.

The ceremony is over and it’s time to get the party started. Try to envisage the event before to decide what entertainment should you choose for the reception. Find the right fit for you and your family, whether it’s an elegant dinner accompanied by traditional Jewish music, or a uniquely-themed bash. With Venue One’s vast inventory of premium china, flatware, glassware, dining tables, crystal versaille chairs and furniture, we will be able to create your vision for your Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Explore all your options and keep an open mind. Don’t get stuck on a particular band or DJ, but remember that the longer you wait to book them, the more you run the risk that they will be snatched up for another celebration.

Your child will only have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah once, so make it count. While several aspects of party planning may appear costly, the investment you make into each of these will result in the overall satisfaction and success of your event.
